What Does Woman Owned Mean for a Private Investigator Agency?

. Updated

Woman owned means a woman owns and controls the agency. On Shleuth, an agency shows proof of that in one of three ways. SBA certified, federal self certified, or in their own words. None of them says how good the investigators are, so check the license too.

When you search for a woman owned private investigator, you want to know the claim is true. Anyone can write woman owned on a website. This guide explains what real proof looks like, and what it cannot tell you.

Headline Answer

Ownership tells you who runs the business. It does not replace checking the license and asking about experience.

SBA Certified

The U.S. Small Business Administration can certify a business as a Women Owned Small Business. To qualify, a business must be small, be at least 51% owned and controlled by women who are U.S. citizens, and have women manage day to day operations and make long term decisions. Firms apply through SBA Certifications (SBA). That outside review makes this the strongest signal. On Shleuth, certified agencies sort first in each state.

Other groups run similar programs, such as state WBE and DBE certificates. On Shleuth those count as certified too.

Federal Self Certified

Some agencies declare themselves woman owned in the federal contractor register. Under federal contracting rules, a women owned business is at least 51% owned by one or more women, with women controlling its management and daily operations (FAR 52.212-3). Lying about woman owned small business status to win a federal contract can bring a fine of up to $500,000, up to 10 years in prison, or both (15 U.S.C. 645). That gives the claim some weight. It is still a signed statement, not an outside review. That is why these agencies sort after the SBA certified ones.

In Their Own Words

Some agencies do not hold a certificate and have not filed in a register. They simply say on their own website that a woman owns the business. We quote the words and link the page. It is the lightest proof, and we mark it plainly so you can weigh it.

What We Never Do

We never guess from a first name or a photo. If we cannot find proof, the agency is not listed.

What Ownership Does Not Tell You

Owning an agency is not the same as working your case. A woman owned agency may still send a male investigator. If you want a woman on the case, ask for one by name. Ask how long she has done this kind of work.

Ownership also does not say anything about price, skill or results. Judge those the way you would for any agency. Check the license, ask about your type of case and get the plan in writing. Our hiring guide walks through it, and you can explore woman owned agencies by the proof they show.

Why Some Clients Prefer It

Some cases go better with a woman involved. In custody, domestic and abuse cases, many clients feel safer talking to a woman. A woman can also blend in at places where a man stands out. Others like to support a woman owned business. Both reasons are fine.

Check the License Too

Most states license private investigators. Ask the agency for its license number and look it up on the state site. A listing on Shleuth shows the number, the status and the date we checked when we have done it. When it says not checked yet, ask the agency and confirm it yourself.

Why Proof Matters in a Directory

A directory that only repeats what agencies say would not help you. A claim is easy to type and hard to check. That is why each listing on Shleuth shows what kind of proof we found, and links to it when we can. If we cannot find proof, we hold the agency back until we can. You never have to guess why an agency is on the list.

You can also help. If you see something wrong, send a correction. If you own an agency, use the Verify page to confirm it and add what you know.

How the Listings Are Ordered

Inside each state, agencies are ordered by strength of proof. Nobody pays to sort higher. Listing is free, and there is no paid placement. You can read the full method on the How we verify page.

Fast Answers

Is woman owned the same as woman led?

Not always. Owned means a woman holds the ownership. Led means she runs it. Many agencies are both. Ask about both if it matters to you.

Can an agency be woman owned but not certified?

Yes. Many agencies never apply for a certificate. On Shleuth they can still be listed if they say so on their own website, and we mark that as in their own words.

Does woman owned mean the investigator is a woman?

No. Ask who will work your case.

What percent does a woman have to own for the business to count as woman owned?

For the SBA program and for federal contracting, at least 51%, with women controlling management and daily operations. The SBA program also requires the women owners to be U.S. citizens.
